Here’s How to Watch ‘Mortal Kombat’ For Free to See the Iconic Video Game Come to Life

If you’re a fan of the ’90s video game, you may want to know how to watch Mortal Kombat online for free. Mortal Kombat—based on the video game series of the same name—premiered on HBO Max and in theaters on Friday, April 23.

Like the video games, the movie is martial arts and fantasy-based and follows a tournament known as “Mortal Kombat,” in which the mightiest warriors from each real compete. If one real wins 10 tournaments in a row, they receive the ability to invade a rival realm, with a goal toward dominance, submergence, and conquering. The film is seen as the third movie in the Mortal Kombat film series, which premiered in 1995 and released a sequel in 1997.

The Mortal Kombat video game debuted in 1992 and has since been spun off into more than 20 other games. “There are so many different crazy action scenes in this film… I could go on forever about them,” Mortal Kombat star Lewis Tan told Fox News in April 2021 of the movie. “I got to set and they were like, ‘OK, you’re good, right?’ So put on [this] harness and we’re going to show you [a] wire stunt and you’re going to lie on the floor here and then you’re going to fly forty feet this way into the dirt on the floor…You’re dizzy, you’re delirious about being out in the real world for the first time and immediately I’m launched on this thing.”

It’s been more than a decade since the last Mortal Kombat movie, but for diehard fans, the new film is worth the wait. Ahead is how to watch Mortal Kombat online for free to see the iconic video game come to life.

Sub-Zero, Kano, Raiden, and co are back on the screen. Whether you’re looking to indulge your childhood gaming addict or just want no-nonsense martial arts to flick to get lost in, the new Mortal Kombat reboot may be just what you’re looking for. So “Get over here” and discover how to watch Mortal Kombat online from anywhere right now, with HBO Max hosting the movie in the US alongside its theatrical release.

While the previous entry in the Mortal Kombat film franchise was more of a fatality than a flawless victory, WarnerBros is finally ready to unleash its reinvention of the movie series. The latest reimagining has certainly been a long time coming. After the failure of 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation put a stop to the trilogy fans had been promised, it was unclear if we would see another installment.

With 2021 comes a new beginning though, and not only are we returning to a packed lineup of fighters, but long-time fans will also be excited to see the return of Bi-Han, Mortal Kombat’s original Sub-Zero.

The 2021 release will see MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan – Deadpool 2, Iron Fist, Into The Badlands) training under a roster of Mortal Kombat’s biggest stars. Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Liu Kong, and Kung Lao all feature here, as the young fighter works to defeat Outworld, led by none other than the elder Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), aka Bi-Han.

While some have technically been waiting for a third Mortal Kombat movie since 1997, the 2021 release has only seen a slight delay. A week’s shift in the release schedule meant that a previous April 16 release date was pushed back to April 23, likely to avoid crossing paths with Godzilla vs Kong at the box office. Nevertheless, you can watch Mortal Kombat in theatres and streaming services like HBO Max on April 23, 2021.

As well as in theaters, Mortal Kombat is now also available to watch in full on HBO Max and will be available to stream until May 22. WarnerBros has moved its whole release schedule to HBO Max this year, which means for just $14.99 a month you can catch all the latest releases in one place.

That means not only can you watch Mortal Kombat online, but you’ll also have access to Godzilla vs Kong, Justice League – The Snyder Cut and plenty more. Not only that, but your HBO Max subscription will also unlock hours of binge-able TV shows like It’s a Sin, I May Destroy You, and Sex and the City.

HBO Max is available on the big screen through your smart TV or through Roku, Fire Stick, and Chromecast, as well as through PlayStation and Xbox consoles. If you’re on the go you can also stream directly to iOS and Android devices.

How to Watch Mortal Kombat across the rest of the world

Mortal Kombat is releasing around the world on April 23, but with cinemas operating at various capacities at this time, it might not be possible to catch a showing in the theatre. Depending on where you are, then, there are a number of ways to watch Mortal Kombat at launch. Between VOD, HBO-affiliated streaming sites, and old-fashioned cinema trips, you’ll find options for the UK, Australia, and Canada below.

Sorry UK folks…at present there are no UK release plans confirmed or announced.

The same goes Down Under. While Foxtel usually offers HBO content through both its cable service and Binge streaming site, Mortal Kombat isn’t currently getting the same treatment and so Australian fans will be heading out for a good old trip to the cinema.

Things are a bit rosier in Canada – you don’t have to find a cinema screen for this one. But you will have to shell out for a VOD rental. We’re seeing it listed for a standard £24.99 from the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and YouTube.

In a previous version of this article, we incorrectly stated that Mortal Kombat would be available in the UK on Amazon Prime from Friday, April 23, and on the Crave streaming service in Canada. This mistake has now been corrected.
